The Screen Guide

Discovered in 1853 Heard Island is one of the earth's most pristine and isolated natural wildernesses. It is remote, inhospitable and almost as far from civilisation as possible. This might explain why it has been occupied and abandoned twice. Located in sub Arctic Indian Ocean, Heard Island also has the distinction of being one of the few remaining spots on Earth completely free from any human-introduced species. Against the stunning backdrop of the Antarctic, this documentary traces the early 19th century American sealing history, through to the Australian occupation in the 1950s and then finally a 1997 expedition of scientists and radio operators attempting to reestablish communication in this last outpost at the edge of the world.
