The Screen Guide

JOURNEY FROM PINSK depicts the filmmaker’s fragmented memories about her mother who grew up in the World War II war torn district of Pinsk, Belarus. She is represented by a woman wearing an emerald velvet coat who travels in a train carriage looking out the window at an ever-changing vista of events, symbols and environments. This woman is distanced, yet also engages with the passing events. The train operates as a metaphor for life. These mixed memories of the family are a dreamlike accumulation of inherited images. We pass an ideal garden of beauty. Her mother’s youth filled with optimism and dreams of love and marriage. Travelling on to more ghostly remnants of Russian imagery that highlights the turmoil and devastation experienced by her. There is a strong sentiment of love and loss throughout. Love is presented as having the ability to heal and prevail.
