In 1988 David Peoples, the screenwriter of Blade Runner, decamped to the Australian desert with new talents Vincent D’Onofrio and Delroy Lindo, rising star Joan Chen, Australia’s own Hugh Keays-Byrne, Dutch icon Rutger Hauer, and an Australian crew led by legendary cinematographer David Eggby ACS to direct his one and only feature film. On release, it was a commercial disaster. Now, 33 years later, The Salute of the Jugger is a cinematic phenomenon, attracting legions of diehard adherents and inspiring a host of fan events and an international sport. Come with us as we delve into the making of this sci-fi classic, going behind the scenes with Peoples, the cast, and some of Australia’s greatest screen practitioners.
