The Screen Guide

Torres Strait Islanders have been pushing for greater autonomy since the 1940s. The Howard Government commissioned a House of Representatives Standing Committees to look into the matter. Their report, presented in August 1997, contained 25 recommendations and stated that 'autonomy for Torres Strait Islanders must grow from consultation with Torres Strait Islanders'. This documentary encompasses a range of views from Island leaders on whether autonomy is a good idea and what form it might take. Interviewees include George Mye, Senior Advisor of TSI Affairs, and a number of community and council leaders from Thursday, Murray, Darnley and Saibai Islands, TSI leaders living on the mainland as well as John Herron, Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, the Hon. Lou Lieberman, Chairman of the Standing Committee and Steve Bredhauer, Member for Cook. It is one of very few locally made portraits of the Islands.
