Former Chinese Red Guard Jiawei Shen has a plan. His wife Lan Wang says it is crazy. But nothing can stop Jiawei on his obsessive mission to create a monumental mural of the turbulent history of Communism, in which hundreds of famous characters, artworks, love stories and battles jostle for space on the walls of his huge studio. Jiawei’s deep dive into the history of revolution is counterpointed by a revealing portrait of his marriage with Lan Wang, forged in the chaos of Mao’s Chinese Cultural Revolution. But as Jiawei’s masterpiece nears completion, Lan Wang is traumatised by the confronting scenes he depicts.
