The Screen Guide

Set during East Timor's 1999 referendum and its horrifying aftermath, ANSWERED BY FIRE is an exploration of first-world intervention in third-world traumas. Canadian Julie Fortin, Australian Mark Waldman and Timorese Ismenio Soares are brought together by the UN's effort to give the Timorese a voice. When the UN evacuates, Mark and Julie are forced to abandon Ismenio and his family. Haunted by guilt, the two Westerners return to Timor.
