The Screen Guide

Joyce Wymarra grew up under the White Australia Policy on Thursday Island. The conditions were similar to Apartheid; whites and blacks were segregated and Joyce was not allowed to speak her native Badu language, Kala Lagaw Ya in school. Later, Joyce married and moved to Sydney where she had to navigate the big city. Having never seen trains or traffic lights before Joyce was scared but her tough upbringing taught her to be strong in the face of unfair challenges.
