The Screen Guide

I AM WOMAN is the story behind the woman who wrote a song which galvanised a generation of women to fight for change. Helen Reddy arrived in New York in 1968 with a suitcase, a three-year-old-daughter and $235 to her name only to be told that the recording contract she had won back home in a talent contest would never happen. Five years later Helen would become the first Australian to win a Grammy, the first recording artist to have three no.1 hits in a row since the Beatles and the first woman to host a regular 1-hour variety show on TV. Her song “I am Woman” became the anthem of the 1975 women’s movement and her life epitomised the very struggle that women were experiencing at that time. Helen Reddy’s story is the perfect vehicle to celebrate a vibrant era where women came together to fight for the basic human right of equality, a time that changed our world forever.
