The Screen Guide

By the 1920s, Cairns' Malaytown became home to one of the first waves of Torres Strait Islander families to settle on mainland Australia. Close to the sea, Malaytown enabled Islander families to replicate as many of their cultural traditions as possible, providing a place of social and economic support within a predominantly white population. In the tradition of family oral histories, MALAYTOWN STORIES features interviews with six former Malaytown residents and descendants.
