Over the course of the 2020 onion-growing season, in a small town in regional Victoria, a daughter visits her parents and films her father tending to his annual prized crop. She learns many things about onions during these visits, including that they don’t like to be planted in the same part of the garden each year, and that they need to be moved to stop diseases building up in the soil. From planting to harvest, as the seasons unfold, the filmmaker explores the many differences between herself and her father while also unearthing some unexpected similarities. Exploring the contrasting worlds of country and city life, she realises there was more to learn from home than she had first thought. Visually striking and rich with metaphor, Onions explores what it means to grow onions – and to grow up.
