The Screen Guide

Two families come together to celebrate Christmas in 1999. Jeremy, one of the party’s hosts, tasks himself with making a home video of the event. Inspired by the process of revered auteur Mike Leigh, Saudade largely unfolds through character-based improvisation. The backdrop of Christmas serves as a provocation: the illusion of the apparently functional nuclear family is exposed, underlying tensions and unresolved conflicts inevitably come to a head, and members of both families are forced to face the various elephants in the room.
