The Screen Guide

1897. Western Australia. A young Muslim cameleer, Hanif, is forced to leave the outback after his mentor is callously gunned down in front of him. Penniless and adrift in the desert, Hanif crosses paths with a wounded bushman, Mal. Unable to leave a man to die, Hanif helps him, but soon discovers the stranger is on the run with two 400oz bars of Crown gold. Unable to afford the journey back to Afghanistan, Hanif bargains for a share of the gold in return for saving Mal’s life. Weak and lost, Mal agrees, but the gold bars are too dangerous while bearing The Crown’s mark. Together, the unlikely partners set off across a rugged desert for a secret furnace – the one place where they can safely melt and reset the bars anew. But as Hanif realises what he is caught up in, his quest to get home becomes a fight for life.
