Berlin International Film Festival selector in Australia

Maryanne Redpath, selector for the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) and Director of Generation, visits Australia this month to view new Australian feature films for consideration for the 2013 Berlinale.

The Berlinale is widely regarded as one of the top three film festivals in the world and is one of the most important events on the international film industry’s calendar. More than 19,000 film professionals from 115 countries are accredited for the festival every year. The Berlinale also hosts the European Film Market. This year the market was attended by close to 8,000 participants from 100 countries in 2012 making it the biggest to date.

The 2012 Berlinale was a great platform for Australian short films, with several winning awards. Bino (p/d: Billie Pleffer, p: Rita Walsh) won the Special Prize from the German Children’s Fund for Best Short Film as well as a Special Mention from the Generation Kplus Children’s Jury. Julian (p/w/d: Matthew Moore, p: Robert Jago) won the Crystal Bear for Best Short Film from the Generation Kplus Children’s Jury. Other shorts screened were Kiss (p: Annmaree J Bell, w/d: Alex Murawski) in Generation 14plus, The Wilding (p: Jannine Barnes, w/d: Grant Scicluna) in Generation 14plus, and Karrabing! Low Tide Turning (p: Tess Lea, d: Liza Johnson, Elizabeth A Povinelli) in Berlinale Shorts.

The festival accepts international entries in the following sections: Competition, Panorama, Forum, Generation and Berlinale Shorts.
