Directors and brothers Michael and Peter Spierig (Predestination) will helm the eighth instalment of the Saw franchise, which is expected to start filming next month.

Director Alethea Jones (The Elegant Gentleman’s Guide To Knife Fighting) who won Tropfest in 2012 with Lemonade Stand, has just wrapped filming on her feature debut Fun Mom Dinner starring Toni Collette (Mental, Jasper Jones).

Actress Rose Byrne (Two Hands, The Turning, Bridesmaids) has been cast as a journalist opposite Oprah Winfrey in the new HBO telemovie The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks about an African American woman whose cells are used to create the first immortal human cell line.

Actor Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Home and Away) will reprise his role in the fourth instalment of the enormously successful Star Trek franchise.

Actor Ryan Kwanten (Blinky Bill The Movie, True Blood) will star alongside Maggie Grace (Taken) and Toby Kebbell (Kong: Skull Island) in action thriller Category 5 about a mint heist during a hurricane.

Actress Judy Davis (The Dressmaker, My Brilliant Career) has been cast as real life actress and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper in the FX anthology series Feud from producer Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story). Davis will star alongside Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford and Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis.

Actor Benedict Samuel (Secret City, The Beautiful Lie) has been cast as a series regular in the upcoming third season of the Fox network series Gotham playing comic book villain Jervis Tetch/Mad Hatter.

Actor Todd Lasance (ANZAC Girls, The Vampire Diaries, Spartacus) will star in the third season of The CW network’s superhero series The Flash alongside fellow Aussie Keiynan Lonsdale (Dance Academy).

Actor Luke Mitchell (Home and Away, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) has joined the cast for the second season of ABC’s Blindspot.

The 2016 Emmy Nominations saw several Australians recognised for their craft:

  • Ben Mendelsohn for his role as Danny Rayburn in the Netflix series Bloodline
  • Iloura VFX supervisor Glenn Melenhorst (Australia) for his Visual Effects work on the Game of Thrones season six episode “Battle of the Bastards”
  • Deborah Riley for her Production Design on the season six Game of Thrones episodes “Blood of My Blood”, “The Broken Man” and “No-One”.

The awards ceremony will take place Sunday 18 September.

The US television adaptation of Animal Kingdom on TNT has been renewed for a second season.

FremantleMedia Belgium has commenced filming on a Flemish language adaptation of Wentworth, bringing the total number of international adaptions to three including Germany and The Netherlands.
