DARK JAM derives its name from the black background against which the made-up heads improvise performances. In turn these bright painted faces are rephotographed many times to create layers of movement and light. Zooms and speed variations form a kind of counter dance through the cinema medium. However, it all feels very primitive, even many close-up shots fail to break the primitive ambience. The music is percussive, using a simple tuned box instrument and occasional cymbals. The music suggests but does not specifically imitate some generic 'tribal' form.

Mysteriously searching amongst a grove of trees the camera finds no conclusion. Following the roll of a bowler's ball the film disintegrates into triple prisms. In the cemetry there are glistening, sweating plastic blossoms and armless, decapitated angels. At a wedding in the park photographer confronts photographer and the groom chucks his cigarette into bushes before the formal moment, A baby is crying. Like lobsters muscle men strut their stuff on TV. Cat desperately devours liver right near the lens.

GRITTY was rephotographed off both slides and cine footage made in 1983. The location is a popular beach where people are active enjoying the sunshine. However, I wanted to explore the notion of the Gaze and to bring out the darker aspects that resort, specially hints of voyeurism. I do this through exaggeratedly slow camera movements upon the still images and long unnaturally extended pans with moving images of children running and fishing in sunset reflecting pools.

Moving leaves, new particular patterns and rhythms. Moving, interacting insects and birds, water, smoke and outrageous flowers. Emphasis on close up images with sudden juxtapositions of sound.

A tiny, deliberately minimal film, based on a kind of 'found material'. The filmmaker generated the source material which takes the form of simple obsessive footage of falling snowflakes, nothing more. The snow swirls and shifts in and out of focus and the screen is quite dim and devoid of exaggerated contrasts. Layers of improvised percussive sounds with African rattles and small Indian drums were recorded direct onto both film strines.

Explores the late John Cage's concept of indeterminacy by juxtaposing the image of an ordinary television set sitting on a table playing a dull program and quiet, low key shots of the surrounding room/window with a quite aggressive sounding text. This text I created by using only five letter words and having these read by two different painter friends. I layered and mixed these onto the sound stripes of the film so that there are rich shifts across the speakers. Some words emerge, some become mere textures. Nouns and adjectives which emerge are ordinary.

A free interpretation or 'response' to Barbara Baynton's Bush Studies. I have distilled certain motifs from the text such as 'Dogs', 'Death', 'Bushiness', 'Aggression' and the idea of a vulnerable lonely hut. I have interwoven these themes in a relatively abstract way so as to move fairly far away from the original Baynton narrative.

The 16th century wall in Ferrara, Italy has a surface made up of thousands of pyramids. Using slides taken from this wall in 1982, photography, multiple exposure overlayering, gels and coloured light break the wall material into shimmering triadic forms. Substance - disintegration.
