Podcast – First Features: Cargo

The filmmakers behind Cargo unpack the journey from Tropfest to making their debut feature, and getting picked up by Netflix.

Cargo

Cargo co-director Ben Howling and writer/co-director Yolanda Ramke join journalist Caris Bizzaca to discuss the experience of making their debut feature film in South Australia.

Howling and Ramke talk about casting and working with actors such as Martin Freeman, balancing horror genre with an emotional father/daughter story, and burning through their wet weather cover with a script that called for 85% exterior shots during horrendous rainfall.

They also give their advice for fellow filmmakers making the leap from shorts to features for the first time.

Cargo is a Causeway Films Production and is in Australian cinemas now, distributed by Umbrella Entertainment, ahead of a worldwide Netflix release.
