Long Story Short: behind the scenes

Cinematographer Matt Toll talks about his approach to filming the new romantic comedy, Long Story Short.

Matt Toll first worked with Josh Lawson on the set of The Eleven O’Clock – the 2016 short film Lawson wrote and starred in that went on to be nominated at the Academy Awards. Three years later Lawson reached out to Toll to be the director of photography on a new feature he had written and directed called Long Story Short, the anticipated follow up to his debut feature film, The Little Death.

“We hadn’t really stayed in touch after [The Eleven O’Clock]. He was back in Los Angeles and he had his second feature film to make,” Toll says. “And a bit of loyalty in the film industry (sic), he came back and rang me and was keen for me to shoot [Long Story Short] for him.”

In this behind the scenes video, Toll talks about why he prefers to work with ARRI Alexa Mini cameras, his reasons for shooting Long Story Short with anamorphic lenses and his approach to working on a set and matching it to a location.

Long Story Short is released by Studio Canal in Australian cinemas from 11 February 2021.
