Latecomers – behind the scenes

Co-creators Emma Myers, Nina Oyama and Angus Thompson discuss disability representation on-screen with their new SBS Digital Original series, Latecomers.

After receiving ABC’s Regional Storyteller Scholarship, Emma Myers and Angus Thompson decided to collaborate on a new project to positively show disability on-screen. Myers suggested they bring in a third voice and broached the idea of Angus’ friend, Nina Oyama.

“I feel like we need one more person who knows just that bit more about how the industry works and so I’m like, ‘Hey, do you think we should bring a professional in?’… But instead we got Nina,” she jokes.

In this behind-the-scenes video, the three co-creators discuss the importance of having an Intimacy Coordinator on set, their aim of reversing disability gender stereotypes and their experience of a virtual writers’ room.

Latecomers is streaming on SBS on Demand from 3 December 2022.
