The Dry: behind the scenes

Editor Nick Meyers discusses his approach to editing Robert Connolly’s mystery feature The Dry.

Nick Meyers formed a close working relationship with director Robert Connolly since meeting at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) more than 20 years ago. He has edited all of Connolly’s films and one advantage Meyers found working on The Dry was being on set during filming.

“What was really interesting for me was actually being on the shoot,” he says. “What I liked about being in the country was getting that sense [of] the rhythms of life out there which are a bit slower than city rhythms and I think that got into the film as well.”

Meyers also discusses using colour motifs to differentiate the past and present storylines, his ‘editing from the inside’ approach, and how his understanding of the protagonist’s point of view informs how he edits.

The Dry is released by Roadshow in Australian cinemas from 1 January 2021.
