On 1 July 2023 Screen Australia released updated and revised Story Development Guidelines (which you can find here).

The two program strands – Generate and Premium – remain, but Head of Development Bobby Romia says based on feedback from the sector and internally, it was “time to simplify our processes.”

The agency has now moved from a two-stage application process that ran for eight weeks with two assessments, to a single stage process with a decision turnaround of six weeks.

“The single stage is looking at simplifying the application process, focusing on all key elements of submission, which is the video pitch, the development plan, creative statement and the long form document,” Romia says on the Screen Australia Podcast.

“Any additional materials to go with that, like a lookbook or source material, is also fine as well, but keep it simple.”

Throughout the podcast, Romia discusses the different types of funding available, what the funding can cover, how much to apply for, how applications are assessed and the development team at Screen Australia, which includes Imogen Gardam, Tanya Mukherjee and Toni Stowers.

“They are a mix of producers, script editors, developers and shapers from film, television, distribution and theatre,” he says. “But we all share a passion for story and for storytellers.”
