Gender Matters is the umbrella name of Screen Australia’s programs to address the underutilisation of female talent in key creative roles in the Australian screen industry, and the resulting lack of diversity in screen stories.

Screen Australia’s KPI for the years 16/17 to 18/19 was that by the end of 2018/19, half of the projects that received Screen Australia production funding would have women occupying at least 50% of key creative roles.

The pages in this section provide statistics on all Screen Australia applications. They apply the methodology for the 16/17 to 18/19 KPI, including a focus on production applications.

For more information on the final results for the original KPI, including a ‘headcount’ examination of participation in applications for production funding and information on future release of data, see the media release here.

From August 2020, Screen Australia will publish a ‘headcount’ breakdown of key creative roles by format (feature drama, television drama, online drama and documentary) across both development and production.
