The Boneyard

A visit to the biggest aircraft graveyard in the world at Davis Monthan Air Force base in Tucson, Arizona. Here 4,400 aircraft are stored in the dry air of the desert. There are fighters, nuclear bombers, helicopters and big transport planes. Some of them are scavenged for spare parts while others are cut up for their metal. Nearby we visit the Pima Air and Space Museum which has an additional 200 types of aircraft. We also meet some of the characters who live in THE BONEYARD.

Australia has one of the most varied collections of classic aeroplanes in the world. There are representative types of most of the great piston engined fighter aircraft of World War II, as well as jets from the former Warsaw Pact countries and a good selection of pre-war civilian types. Australia's Warbird movement is dedicated to keeping them flying. In this third film, the successor to SPITFIRE OVER AUSTRALIA and CURTISS KITTYHAWK, Jeff Watson looks at a selection of warbirds, either flying or preserved in a static condition. Aircraft featured are CAC Boomerang, CAC Sabre, CAC Mustang, Hawker Sea Fury, North American Harvard, Cessna A37, PZL Iskra, Mig 15 UTI. Non flying aircraft include the Australian War Monorails Messerschmitt 262, 163 and 109G.

Australia has one of the most active warbird movements in the world. A warbird is a military aircraft restored to fly. This film looks at the number of fighter aircraft owned by civilians including the Kittyhawk, Spitfire and German Messerschmitt 109.

Presenter Jeff Watson (BEYOND 2000 and GETAWAY) has reconstructed the story of Sidney Cotton, Australian-born aviator and inventor recruited by British Intelligence to spy on Nazi Germany. Just before the Nazis marched into Poland in September 1939, Cotton flew to Berlin on a peace mission which could have changed the course of history - he was to bring Hermann Goering to England for talks with the British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. Cotton was lucky to escape with his life. His was the last civilian plane to fly out of Berlin before the outbreak of World War II.

A look at new aircraft entering Australian skies both military and civil. They include the Airbus A 380 super jumbo, the Lighting ii Joint Strike Fighter, the C 17 Globemaster transport and the unmanned aerial vehicle the Global Hawk. Filmed in the USA and France, the documentary includes interviews with aircraft engineers, pilots and airline executives.
Southend To Sydney - The Return Of The 707

In 2006 a team of engineers restored a 50-year-old Qantas Boeing 707 and flew it back to Australia from England. En route the crew teamed up with movie star John Travolta who owns an identical Qantas aircraft now configured as an executive jet. The aircraft as then flown to the Qantas Founders Outback Museum in Longreach, Queensland.
Spitfire Over Australia

The story of the spitfire fighter plane in Australia and how a crop dusting pilot rebuilt a spitfire to fly again. There is film of the spitfire in action against the Japanese in 1943 in northern Australia and interviews with old pilots including the former Prime Minister Sir John Gorton.
