Developing the Developer is a three-and-a-half day workshop aimed at increasing the pool of talented experts in the field of story development. Its focus is to improve access for practitioners from diverse backgrounds, and will focus on story fiction development methodologies and tools, as well as market context.

This workshop is for people who are passionate about facilitating other people’s creative visions in roles such as script consultant, script editor or dramaturg.

It was created in December 2016 in response to Screen Australia’s landmark report Seeing Ourselves, which revealed that characters of non-Anglo Celtic backgrounds, those with a disability, or who identified as LGTBQI, were all underrepresented on screen.

The first workshop took place in April 2017 and from the 16 creatives who were selected to participate, to date seven have gone on to secure professional placements. These include Fiona Tuomy at Film Art Media, Santilla Chingaipe at Arenamedia, Anthea Williams at Causeway Films, Mala Sujan at Easy Tiger, Martine Delaney at Roar Films, Mithila Gupta at Blackfella Films and Jenevieve Chang at both Arclight and Felix Media. A number of participants are also engaged as external assessors for Screen Australia.

Louise Gough, currently employed as Development Executive at Screen Australia but due to depart the agency in January 2018, will return to lead the workshop in a consultancy capacity. Guests will include industry peers and prior participants of Developing the Developer 2017.

HOW TO APPLY

Developing the Developer will take on eight to ten participants for a workshop in Sydney from Thursday 12 to Sunday 15 of April 2018.

Participants will be required to prepare work ahead of, and during the workshop, and be available for the entire workshop dates. Screen Australia will meet with participants after the workshop to discuss goals and help unlock opportunities in the story development field.

Applications are now open to currently practicing fiction developers working in screen or in other sister art-forms, including live performance, literary, and non-fiction narrative forms. Applicants must demonstrate some track record in story or new work development, from any genre, platform or narrative art-form.

Applicants can discuss their background in their Personal Objectives Statement as part of the application.

Developing the Developer will be offered at no cost to the successful applicants, including travel and accommodation for applicants who don’t live within Greater Sydney.

Applications, including all relevant supporting material, must be submitted online by 2 February 2018.
